Yao Hai’s Freedom Preservation Project explores individual identity and the challenges and impact on freedom, democracy and fundamental values of a society in the age of information overload when people can freely and easily acquire fast changing world of information. Unrecognized social systems are inevitably facing the same threats.

Due to Yao Hai’s subjective experience of identity change and the experience travelling and living abroad, the impact of cultural differences on him and the conscious knowledge of individual identity have gradually magnified. Self-recognition and recognition of others become interrelated that causes further doubts and questioning.

Yao Hai implemented this project with a business mindset to recognize and comprehend the relationship between individual identity and social identity. He created his own product by selecting five most often seen propaganda in China, and having printed each of them in white onto five different black punching bags. ‘Democracy’, ‘Harmony’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Patriotism’ and ‘Rule of Law’ are the five products. Yao Hai conducted product testing by inviting a group of volunteers to perform a boxing routine on these five punching bags. Quality and strength of the products were being tested. Of the five products, ‘Freedom’ has shown an extraordinary test result as the participant let out a wail during the test.

In order to increase product awareness, Yao Hai launched an outdoor advertisement campaign. He printed the five signage, each of them on different huge-size red banners and hung the banners in Treasure Hill tourist attractions. Only after a few days of this outdoor campaign, some local residents began to feel anxious after seeing the signage emerged and some were questioning the person in charge of the art institution: ’Is political change coming to Taiwan?’

In this project, Yao Hai put himself into a situation where doubts and conflicts exist. The questioning process triggered reasoning and response.

Freedom Preservation Project comprises four installation works – ‘I Cannot Prove that Treasure Hill Loves You’, ‘Freedom Preservation Project’, ‘Art is a Self-placebo, Other Than That, Art is Nothing’ and ‘I Only Love My Friends’.
